We are now seeing cyber attacks almost every week on local companies, this BBC article just goes to show how organised it can be.

We have been running short 1 hour awareness sessions for our customers on cyber attacks and how to minimise the threat using good practices and technology.

Here are a few tips:

  • If you have any doubts about who is calling then arrange to speak with them later.  Buy yourself some time.
  • Don’t assume that the phone number they give you is the real number for the provider. Call back on a known number, it may take longer but it is safer and allows you to check who you are calling.
  • Don’t give out your account details or any personal details.
  • Don’t allow someone to connect to your system to check it unless you know them, we often use remote support sessions with customers that know us but we have seen customers duped in to allowing unknown scammers access to their PC’s.  If you are unsure then ring them back on a known number.
  • If you receive an email asking you to authenticate or check your security settings, always think twice before entering any information. This is one of the most common methods for gaining user details such as passwords.
  • Don’t use the same password for all your systems. Make passwords complex, we often recommend a phrase, lyrics from a song, something that is personal to you and  allows you to easily recall it.
